How an Internship Can Improve Your Gap Year – Even During a Pandemic

Many students take a year off between high school and college—especially now when the spread of Covid-19 has disrupted college plans. In fall 2020, most universities and colleges are offering limited in-person classes or a remote-only option—both of which carry a high price tag for a limited college experience. Traditionally gap years have given students a chance to break from academics and engage in extensive travel.  Some students use the year to earn money to pay for college. In 2020 the spread of Covid-19 has limited travel and many in-person work opportunities. The key to a successful gap year is to use the time wisely. Working remotely has become a new normal. What does this mean for internships? It is no surprise that the COVID pandemic has changed the world in ways we could have never imagined: events have been cancelled, trips postponed, and school is now on Zoom. Among these changes has been a shift in what we once knew as the “traditional workplace.” Employees used to working in a cubicle during 9-to-5 hours started experiencing much more flexibility with regard to standard workplace culture by working remotely. 5 Ways to Prepare for Your Virtual Interview

There have been major changes in the workplace during the last year, resulting in similar shifts for internships. Many companies operating remotely have adopted hiring processes that include remote interviewing and onboarding. This includes interns. With traditional, on-site interviews currently not the norm, now is a good time to refresh your interviewing skills. How do you get ready for a remote interview? Words and Phrases to Avoid on Your Resume

As a recent high-school or college graduate, you may have little or no experience. This is why it’s critical that the experience you do have is presented on your resume in a way that makes an impact. Most prospective employers won’t consider moving forward with an applicant whose resume appears sparse, weak, or not compelling. What can you do? Avoid overused or weak language and instead, convey your experience in a way that shows off the work you’ve done. Use these quick fixes to transform your resume from dull to polished. Examples of words and phrases that don’t belong on your resume and what to use instead.  1st Person/Personal Pronouns: The first-person pronoun “I” Is implied and does not belong on a resume.
